Josep Mompou (Barcelona 1888 - Vic 1968)

We will visit an exhibition of his works at La Pedrera, on Saturday, March 28.

Here are the arrangements:

  • Saturday, March 28. We will meet on the corner of Provenca and Paseo de Gracia as from 11.45 for an 12.00 start.

  • The visit will finish around 13.00 and it will be in English! Don't worry about English levels for anyone you want to invite. We can all help with translation.

  • Early lunch/snack in a nearby venue to mix and talk.

  • Reminder email closer to the date. But you can mark it off in your schedule now.

Please let me know by email before Thursday, March 19, 18.00 if you think that you will be coming.

Josep Mompou belongs to the generation of artists who are still largely unknown by a significant part of the public.

He was a member of the so-called ‘generació del 17’ (generation of '17). Josep Mompou embodies the development of Noucentisme painting towards pure representationalism. This was the successor of fauvism, which prevailed throughout Europe at the end of the first third of the 20th century.

Mompou developed a solid career that was widely successful among critics and accepted by the most important collectors in the country such as Lluís Plandiura and Josep Sala. He was also recognised internationally in the 30’s in France and the US.

Waldemar George, an influential critic at the time, presented Mompou's second sole exhibition in Paris in 1931 and defined him as "a Catalan painter with French training or, more precisely, a European painter. A painter who expresses his visual sensations in a language bereft of useless adornments".

This sparkling artistic career was unfortunately cut short in 1934 when pulmonary tuberculosis forced him to stop his creative activities. His recovery, which did not occur until well into the 40s, coincided historically with a radical change in the world's artistic direction, which left Mompou out of touch with new prevailing trends. Nevertheless, he was still respected by future generations of painters.

With this exhibition, Caixa Catalunya intends to pay homage to this outstanding Catalan painter by giving a retrospective overview of the main themes in his work: the human figure, the countryside and still lifes.
